As a naturopath and nutritionist, it is so important to me what we eat, how we prepare our foods and my household products.
As a mum of two boys, it’s even more important for them to be using products that are natural, safe, and toxic free. There is so much I can’t control, so I try to control what I can inside my home.
I was so excited when ecostore announced they were bringing out an oral care range, as I have used all their products for years in Australia and now in New Zealand, from dishwashing to laundry powder.
The oral care range has three different kinds of toothpaste, a mouthwash and toothbrush. I have tried them all out, and so has my family. I absolutely love them. The flavours are fresh, minty but not overbearing. I also love that the consistency is not gritty but smooth. Most natural toothpastes I have tried are sandy, which does not appeal to children as you can imagine! So far, the whitening is my favourite, but I change up which one I use all the time! I can’t wait to see the results after using the whitening in the upcoming weeks!
For me, I was so impressed with the mouthwash, most mouthwashes are so strong I need to wash my mouth out with water after. This one is minty and mild as its alcohol-free, even the children use it! I have really loved this product, as I have not found anything like it!
Why go natural you ask?
I always try to go natural in all my home products, over the years we have swapped conventional to natural, or as toxic-free as we can.
From our cleaning products to my makeup and even hair care! With so many health problems in children especially including skin irritants, I want to eliminate the risk in my home as much as I can.
If you think about it, toothpaste you use EVERY SINGLE DAY x twice a day. You ingest some, even if you wash your mouth out properly. Children especially, the amount children swallow is even more! I have a 17-month-old son, he literally eats toothpaste, so you can imagine my delight that now I don’t even need to worry about how much he is swallowing when he brushes his teeth!
My 7-year-old doesn’t like anything “spicy” so it was important for me he has a toothpaste he can brush his teeth with and not hurry through it. He likes the “Orange” one which is Propolis flavour.
Conventional toothpastes can have harmful chemicals, some that are safe in small amounts, however, we brush our teeth over 700 times a year so even in a small amount it can be dangerous. Some of the nasties in toothpaste conventionally are Triclosan, Parabens and even SLS.
These nasties can cause serious health problems from rashes, stomach upsets to being endocrine disruptors.
Triclosan is mostly used in toothpastes because of its antibacterial and anti-fungal agent. This can have a negative effect on our essential hormones, by decreasing the number of thyroid hormones. We need our thyroid hormones as they regulate our metabolic rate, mood, and bone maintenance. Studies have shown that children exposed to anti-bacterial products at a young age have increased risks of developing asthma and eczema.
Parabens are used as a preservative in cosmetic products and can be used in conventional toothpastes too. Parabens are xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are chemicals that alter the normal function of the hormones. They mimic our natural hormones, blocking or binding hormone receptors. This can be particularly detrimental to women and fertility.
As you can see, it’s important to me as a mum of two young boys, to have the most natural products as WELL as making sure the natural products work as good as or even better than the conventional ones.
I was absolutely delighted to be part of the ecostore family, and chat about the new oral care range.
ecostore’s oral care range is alcohol-free, derived from natural ingredients, fights cavities and protects gums and does all the things a good toothpaste, mouthwash and toothbrush should but without the nasties!
I will be sharing some stories over the next coming months and sharing more information about the ecostore oral care range and other products I also use in and around my home!
